Araminta Ross, also known as Harriet Tubman (March 1822 – March 10, 1913), was an American abolitionist and political activist. She led dozens of enslaved people towards freedom in the North along the Underground Railroad, an underground network of safe houses organized for this purpose.
Born into slavery, Araminta Ross went on to adopt the first name of her mother, Harriet. She served as an army intelligence officer and spy for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Tubman has campaigned for women’s suffrage in her final years. The first lady to lead an armed expedition during the war, she led the raid at Combahee Ferry, which liberated over 700 enslaved civilians.
After she died in 1913, she became a symbol of bravery and freedom.
